International Women’s Day which is annually celebrated on 8th March is a symbol of women’s struggle for economic, political and social equality.

This day is celebrated as a tribute to the efforts of women for their emancipation and fight for gender equality,  although this struggle in some countries still continues.

Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Macedonia through its Women Section decided to mark International Women’s Day on a different way by setting up its own stand at the center of the city of Skopje.

They were distributed flyers for the trade union movement in Macedonia and the participation of trade union for getting the rights and protection of women in employment.

The event was celebrated under the motto “Why we need a trade union” as a way to convey the message that organized in trade unions we are stronger in defense of workers’ rights, among them we will point: paid maternity leave, retirement age or the right not to be fired from work because you are married or you have a child, or you are sick, protection from harassment etc.

In Macedonia there is still that struggle for equality but has reached a higher level, women struggle for equality with men, in access to higher managerial positions, positions that require greater intellectual abilities or managerial positions.
